Sustainability in design is an increasingly important topic in the modern world. A beautiful package is wonderful, but a beautiful package that helps to decrease waste or encourage informed lifestyle choices is what we need to see in an informed society. Nintendo GO was a sustainable design created as a hypothetical next generation Nintendo DS console. The package that the console is sold in doubles as a carrying case for the console. It has little sleeves inside for the console, games, and a charger. This package promotes sustainability in its design by essentially deleting the waste that would have been created from a regular package, as well as the individual game packages, which were redesigned to be made of small cardboard sleeves rather than the regular large plastic cases. The design also utilized the Nintendo DS’s built-in camera as a method to pull up game manuals from QR codes placed on the game packages. This approach removed the need for game manuals, saving unnecessary ink and paper use. The branding of Nintendo GO was a challenge as it required following Nintendo’s brand guidelines. The final product pulls colours from previous Nintendo consoles and uses a repeat pattern similar to that of the Nintendo controller’s button layout.
